Understanding Consent: A Guide for Parents Considering Earlobe Piercings for Their Children

At Evolution Body Piercing, we are committed to piercing children's earlobes in a safe, consensual, and supportive environment. By respecting each child's autonomy and decision-making capacity, we aim to make the piercing experience positive and empowering. The following guidelines will clarify our policies to create the best possible experience for you and your child.

Initial Consent

Consent goes far beyond simply saying "yes" to earlobe piercings. It means that your child understands their commitment, including the responsibility of the healing process and the necessity of following aftercare instructions. We require children to express their consent by writing their names on the consent form, demonstrating their understanding and agreement.

Creating a Supportive Environment

We strive to make the piercing experience as comfortable as possible for parents and children. If the child becomes nervous or fearful, we will only proceed once they are comfortable. We communicate directly with them, emphasizing that their body belongs to them and that they have complete control over their decisions. If they decide not to proceed with the piercing, we assure them (and you) that we are here to support their choice now and in the future when they feel ready.

Empowering Children to Make Decisions

A crucial part of our process involves empowering children to decide about their bodies. We reassure them that changing their mind is okay, even if they initially consented. This principle teaches children valuable lessons about consent and bodily autonomy, reinforcing that this is a positive experience of their choosing.

Our Stance on Coercion and Pressure

We've observed instances where children become nervous or scared before the piercings, leading some parents to consider holding them down or pressuring them to proceed despite their reluctance. Let us be clear: we will never condone or participate in restraining a child for piercings. We aim to foster a positive, fun experience, not a traumatic one.

Educating on Pain and the Piercing Process

When asked about pain, we believe in honesty. We inform children that the piercing may hurt a little but assure them it's manageable. This approach helps set realistic expectations, unlike promising a pain-free experience, which can lead to distrust or increased anxiety.

Guardian Consent/Identification Requirements

New Mexico Law requires that we keep a record proving that a minor's parent or legal guardian consented to their minor being pierced. Check out our Age and ID Requirements here to ensure you have the proper documents for your visit.

Appointments

We suggest booking an appointment rather than trying to be served as a walk-in for these types of piercings. We look forward to welcoming and supporting you both through this exciting milestone at your child's pace and with their full consent.
