A guide to health insurance in the Netherlands

Anyone living or working in the Netherlands is obliged to have basic health insurance. We offer 100% free choice in hospitals and general practitioners with both of our basic insurances. Read more about the Dutch healthcare system and our health insurance plans on this page.

How does the Dutch healthcare system work? Our supplementary insurances

Would you like to be insured for costs that are not covered by your basic health insurance such as physical therapy, orthodontics (up to the age of 18) or maternity care? Please choose one of our complete supplementary insurances. We offer extensive coverage of additional healthcare costs at an excellent premium.

Your digital health insurance card

Your personal health insurance card proves that you are insured for medical costs. Upon request it can be used by healthcare professionals to claim medical costs directly to your insurance.

Co-insure your children

You can add your children up to the age of 18 to your health insurance free of charge. Read more on this page about adding your children to your health insurance

With a refund policy (restitutiepolis) you can go to any care provider of your liking such as any independent treatment centre (ZBC). In the Netherlands, we call this ‘free choice of health care’. How does it work? After receiving the bill you can send it directly to your health insurer or you can claim the costs afterwards. Your healthcare insurer will always reimburse the costs if the treatment is covered by your health insurance unless the bill is unreasonably high compared to other healthcare providers in the Netherlands.

An in-kind policy (naturapolis) is also referred to as ‘contracted care’. This means that when visiting a contracted independent treatment centre (ZBC), your health insurer will reimburse all of the health costs. If you visit a non-contracted independent treatment centre (ZBC) you will have to pay a part of the medical costs yourself. This is on average approximately 30 per cent of the total costs.
